EUREF: ETRS89 REALIZATION

The IAG Sub-commission for Europe, EUREF, invites you to a questionnaire concerning the ETRS89 realization in Europe. The goal of this survey is to figure out the level of your satisfaction with the current ETRS89 realization in Europe based on ITRF2000 and your willingness (or your needs) for or objections against the introduction of a new ETRS89 realization based on ITRF2014.

The ETRS89 realization in Europe is closely related to the ITRF realization, through a similarity transformation linking the ETRS89 to the International Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS).

In 2016, the most recent realization of the ITRS, ITRF2014 has been published. The authors demonstrated that it is more accurate and more stable on the long-term than past ITRF versions. At the last EUREF symposium in San Sebastian in May 2016 resolution no. 3 was approved by the plenary which a) requests the EUREF Technical Working Group to formulate and issue a questionnaire regarding the relation between ETRS89 and ITRS realization and b) encourages the EUREF community to give feedback and to answer the questionnaire. The complete text of the resolution can be found in Annex 1.

In order to help answering the questionnaire, we provide in Annex 2 a fact sheet regarding ITRF2014 and some quantitative numbers of the reference frame change that would occur between ETRF2000 and ETRF2014. In addition, Annex 3 lists, to the best of our knowledge, the current ETRS89 realizations used in Europe.

The IAG sub-commission for Europe, EUREF, therefore would very much appreciate your active contribution to answering this questionnaire until April, 15, 2017. Of course, later contributions will be considered as far as possible. The result of this enquiry will be reported at the next EUREF Symposium in Wroclaw.

Please complete the questionnaire and send it, optimally by e-mail, to the following address:
