EuroGeographics hails once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape EU geospatial data policy
Press Releases | 14 Oct 2026
EuroGeographics has welcomed the new European Commission study on core geospatial data, calling it a defining moment for its members – Europe’s National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authorities.
The newly launched 18-month Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS) study will assess the current landscape of data provision across the EU to produce a roadmap towards a harmonised European policy and legal framework.
Sallie Payne Snell, Secretary General and Executive Director of EuroGeographics said: “This is the most significant EU policy opportunity for our members since the INSPIRE Directive. For the first time, there is serious attention to understanding proper EU governance for core geospatial data at a European level.”
“The study recognises EuroGeographics and our members as key contributors to shaping Europe’s digital future. It is a powerful platform to champion the essential contribution that authoritative data makes to Europe’s strength, security and prosperity – and reinforces its integral role within national, European and global critical infrastructure.”
“Our members provide the foundation that makes other European data interpretable and usable, and only they can certify national geospatial data as trusted and authoritative. As the legally mandated custodians of authoritative data, National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authorities are therefore uniquely placed to shape the governance of Europe’s geospatial infrastructure for years to come. Any framework that reduces them to passive data suppliers would undermine the very concept of authoritative geospatial data and Europe’s capacity to understand and manage its own territory.”
All European National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authorities from the EU27 Member States are expected to be contacted as part of the study, along with EuroGeographics, which will reflect the views of its membership from across geographical Europe.
The study will identify gaps and barriers in core geospatial data provision and consider three possible pathways for future action.
Sallie Payne Snell continued: “All three offer opportunities for national authorities, but the priority must be a pragmatic, workable and implementable solution that can deliver benefits within the shortest and most realistic timeframe.”
“Authoritative geospatial data underpins everything, and the lack of authoritative pan-European data needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Members’ expertise and authoritative national data are driving an ambitious vision for Europe’s geospatial future. EuroGeographics will advocate for the solution that delivers real value for members and the EU alike, creating a foundation for future growth.”
EuroGeographics is an international not-for-profit organisation (AISBL/ IVZW under Belgian Law). BCE registration: 833 607 112) and the membership association for the European National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registry Authorities.
